Where startups post jobs first

Startups post jobs first on their own career page, which is usually hosted by an applicant tracking system such as Ashby, Greenhouse or Lever. Big job sites copy them from there.

Why the career page comes first

The career page is where the company writes the posting. Job sites and aggregators pick it up later, by scraping or by a feed. A copy can't appear before the original, and some never get copied at all.

The main places

  • The company's career page. The original. Usually on Ashby, Greenhouse, Lever, Workable or a similar system. The address often shows it: jobs.ashbyhq.com/<company>, boards.greenhouse.io/<company>, jobs.lever.co/<company>.
  • Hacker News Who's Hiring. One thread at the start of each month. Founders and engineers post there directly, often with a name to email.
  • LinkedIn and other big job sites. Some startups post there directly. Many postings there are copies, and a copy can still be listed after the original has closed.
  • Investor job boards. Many VC firms list jobs at the companies they back. These are copies of the career pages.

Your options

  • Follow the career pages yourself. Pick the companies you want and check their pages. Accurate, but it only covers the companies you already know.
  • Read the monthly Hacker News thread. Direct and free, but it's one long page a month.
  • Use winq. It reads startup career pages and the Hacker News thread for you, drops the jobs that break your deal-breakers, and shows the few that pass, each with the reason.

Questions
